Mark Mothersbaugh's work is being featured at the Parlor Gallery in Asbury Park now through June 20th. I took the opportunity to check it out last Saturday and was far from disappointed. It's nice to know that the Jersey Shore can attract artist as influential and innovative as he. Check it out!

If you pay attention, and succumb to your surroundings, everything that we come into contact with, if we allow them, can be strangely related to each other.
My favorite book of all time is The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers. McCullers skillfully intertwines 5 characters wherein which she creates a story which explores the struggle with isolation and loneliness. Recently, I started reading The Ballad of the Sad Cafe, an equally satisfying read, which focuses on the same themes as The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. In my research on McCullers, I stumbled across a poem by Charles Bukowski, who happens to be another favorite author of mine.
Carson McCullers
she died of alcoholism wrapped in a blanket on a deck chair on an ocean steamer.
all her books of terrified loneliness
all her books about the cruelty of loveless love
were all that was left of her
as the strolling vacationer discovered her body
notified the captain
and she was quickly dispatched to somewhere else on the ship
as everything continued just as she had written it
Charles Bukowski
It's not necessarily surprising that Bukowski would write of McCullers and her lost battle with alcoholism being that he was an infamous alcoholic himself.
While on the subject of depressed alcoholic artists, here's Modest Mouse at Albert Hall doing Bukowski. One of my favorites!
Bukowski by Modest Mouse
"Woke up this morning and it seemed to me, that every night turns out to be a little bit more like Bukowski. And yeah, I know he's a pretty good read. But God who'd wanna be? God who'd wanna be such an asshole? God who'd wanna be? God who'd wanna be such an asshole?"
Back in 2002 after leaving Tennessee I vowed I would never return to Manchester. It was hot, dry and dusty, unorganized and much too far away! But after the announcement earlier this week, I have to eat my words. With Phish and The Boss headlining and others signed on such as Bon Iver, Animal Collective, David Byrne, Wilco, Girl Talk, MGMT to name a few I will be purchasing my ticket immediatly!
At the height of my Fleet Foxes infatuation last summer, I stumbled across a cover of Tiger Mountain Peasant Song. Two teenage sisters, Klara & Johanna Soderberg, who I've recently come to learn go by the name of First Aid Kit, retreated to the woods to perform this beautiful cover. Apparently Fleet Foxes aggreed with my opinion because during a recent show in Den Haag, Netherlands, the duet joined Fleet Foxes on stage to add some back-up harmonies. If you are one of the few who haven't had the pleasure of seeing the video, here you go...
As a result of First Aid Kits new found fame, Rabid Records, whose founders are Karin Dreijer Anderson and Olof Dreijer from The Knife, recently signed them. Their new EP Drunken Trees is now available for download on their myspace page I wish both of these two talented girls the best of luck.
While on the subject of the Driejer siblings, Karin recently released her solo album under the name of Fever Ray. Here's the video for "If I had a Heart".
I suppose it should have been expected that this album would follow in the same vein as The Knife. Although, I thoroughly enjoy the new album from Karin, I hope there's a project in the works for The Knife in the not too distant future.
The 2008 release of the Nina Simone box set To Be Free appears to have re-awakened some peoples interest in her music. The trailer for the new Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Jarhead, Road to Perdition) film, Revolutaionary Road features my personal favorite Nina Simone song, Wild is the Wind.
While on the subject of movie trailers featuring great music, The Arcade Fires My Body is a Cage is used in a short but beautiful trailer for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
While I must admit that i cannot say that I've seen either of these films but they are both on the top of my list!
Revolutionary Road recently just reached wide release so those of us who aren't in the major cities will be able to see it!
To start the New Year, I decided to create a new blog here rather than on Myspace in an attempt to reach out to more of you. Be it just a resolution or an effort in self rejuvenation, Im going to try and post as much as possible and keep you updated on what's happening in my head.
Here are my favorite albums from the past year which i feel need to be recognized. (I usually would have this on my Myspace page but feel that it belongs here instead.)
Bon Iver For Emma, Forever Ago
Fleet Foxes Sun Giant EP
Fleet Foxes
Portishead Third
Dr. Dog Fate
Ane Brun The Changing of The Seasons
Vampire Weekend Vampire Weekend
I am well aware many of you will criticize my choices, but they are the albums which I felt the most attachment to.
